Bits-N-Pieces
Print View(rev. 5/16/2008)
Since I began seeing the chiropractor and massage therapist, many symptoms and events during my lifetime have come to mind. Some may not be related at all while others make me wonder....was THAT the cause…was THAT due to my spine being misaligned? These memories come in bits and pieces. This post will be a collection of those bits-n-pieces. This post will be updated and revised as new ones come to me. New ones will be in italics.
Please keep in mind that this was written more as a record of memory for myself than for others. For others, this may be TMI...too much information.
I remember from the past:
- Breech birth - I was born breech.
- Lordosis - I was born with a sway back (lordosis).
- Car accident – around age 8, I was in a car accident. Wearing seat belts were not required by law at the time. I was sleeping across the back seat when the accident happened. We know that we were tossed about rather dangerously. Mom, who was driving, landed in the back seat with me. X-rays showed an injury to the collar bone for her and an injured wrist for Andy. The only obvious injury for me was a minor cut to the face at the lower jaw.
- Scoliosis – in my pre-teen years, a nurse came into our school to examine the spines of all of the students. I was sent home with a note to my parents suggesting that I see a doctor because of the curvature that was noticed. That curvature progressed over the years and was quite evident in the x-rays by the chiropractor.
- Shoes – In my teen years and since, wearing high heeled shoes has ALWAYS caused lower back fatigue or strain.
- Knees and toes - As far back as I can remember, my knees have always had an inward turn. If I stood with the knees pointing straight ahead, my toes pointed outward. If I stood with my toes pointing straight ahead, my knees turned inward. This seemed to worsen with age; especially most recently.
- Neck - I often felt the need to stretch my neck due to the stress and tension felt there.
- Neck – During the past five years, while driving, if I turned to look at the front passenger, the right side of my neck felt a sudden “stop sign”. It felt as though my neck could turn no further though it could in the past.
- Bladder – Before the age of 25, there was a time where I battled recurring bladder infections.
- During pregnancy and delivery, my lower back is where I felt all of the physical stresses.
- During delivery, my OB had to try more than one attempt at injecting the epidural. When he was able to do so successfully, it numbed only one side. A second doctor was called in – more experienced – who was able to administer the injection in a way that it worked as it was supposed to.
- During delivery, I dilated only a few centimeters and stopped. A c-section was necessary. I was told my “bones” would not open.
- Fall – somewhere near 1995 or so, when attempting to sit in one of those folding beach loungers, the legs folded under and I landed upon my rear. At that time, I felt a sudden pain at my spine between the shoulder blades. It left as quickly as it came.
- Thyroid – Around 1996, there was a two year period of thyroid dysfunction. I was put on medication. Once the TSH levels were corrected and then sustained, the meds were stopped. TSH levels have been in the normal range since.
- Ears – In my left ear, I could occasionally hear a sloshing heartbeat sound
- On concrete – Around 1994, I worked with Dad in his tire business. I bought my first pair of expensive shoes because of foot and back aches caused by being on my feet on concrete flooring.
- More concrete – When Dad’s business closed, I began working at MMCS. Concrete flooring and climbing a flight of concrete stairs caused lower back aches.
- Backpack – The last several years of being employed at MMCS, I carried a back pack filled with my teaching tools several times in the day. I recall having to stop that because of upper back and shoulder pains.
- Teeth – One upper and one lower back tooth on the right side had to be pulled due to unceasing pain. Although no flaw in the tooth itself could be found, I insisted on them being extracted because of the constant pain.
- Eye twitch – right eyelid twitches that were at times rather persistent and usually while driving
- Driving – long distant drives of an hour or longer became uncomfortable for my back and produced a need to stretch
- Chin and upper lip – an occasional twitch has occurred on the right side
- Riding Mower – Since about 2005, riding a mower caused pain near my spine between the shoulder blades. I was able to accomplish mowing, but it had to be done at a low speed and I had to be very conscience about posture while doing so.
- Fall to knees – In March 2006, I tripped and fell. I landed in kneeling position. They were sore and bruised for a few weeks. After that, they became sore and fatigued easily….UNTIL my side symptoms started in Oct/Nov. 2007. When those began, the knees no longer bothered me.
- Shoulders - I often felt stress and tension in the shoulder area. Because of this, Scott and Mike were often asked to massage that area to loosen it. Sometimes that tension was felt from the shoulder blades to the base of the skull.
- Headaches – there was a time when I had rather severe headaches. They were relieved after taking a load off and resting in bed. Because I was working at MMCS, reading tiny text and the handwriting of younger students all through the day, Mike insisted on me seeing an eye doctor. That resulted in prescription eye glasses, but only a very mild prescription.
- Lifting – I never placed a limit on the weight that I lifted. There was not much that I would not try and not much that I failed at carrying; though I probably did not do it with spinal health in mind.
- Arms – In the summer of 2006, I painted my living room ceilings. During that project, they have become tired easily.
- Knees – during that same painting project, stepping up and down from the stool caused soreness in my knees
- Bed pillows – For about the last 10 years, I have had to be very careful in choosing bed pillows which I slept on. Choosing the wrong one caused aches to the upper back.
- Toes – I remember while working at MMCS, two toes on my left foot felt like they were disconnected from the others. It felt like if my little toe had not been there, the toe next to it might fall off the foot.
- Rocking Baby Nephews – With the baby’s head cradled in my left arm, it would become tired and sore before the baby would fall asleep. I noticed this with “BLN” who is now four and “LNDN” who was born two years later.
- Fingers and hands – occasionally, I felt a prickly feeling in my left fingers and/or palm. It seemed like I may have had a splinter, or piece of glass under the skin, but none was ever found.
- Right foot – over the years, I noticed that it seemed to be turning outward more and more; my toes did not point straight ahead when walking.
- Rash – an under the skin rash appeared after eating shrimp. Benadryl cleared that up.
- Menstrual – irritation to my “private areas” occurred while wearing feminine pads.
- Privates – occasional itch, pressure, or twinges
- Vaginal – itch that mimicked yeast infection, but unusual to those I’ve had before. Felt more like a pinch in the upper vaginal area.
- Right side – muscle pull with occasional prickly feeling to the lower right side
- Right side – twitching was felt in lower right side
- Right side – pinching inside the pelvic bone while sitting; pulling while standing
- Right side – while resting, a tight spasm traveled from my lower right side toward the rib area
- Right side – stirring brownie batter caused a pull in the right side
- Bladder – frequent urination
- Bladder – slight leakage was noticed when I lifted a box of Christmas decorations
- Bowels – unusual growling sound during one bowel movement
- Upper tummy – twitching in the upper right abdomen area; just below the ribs
- Groin – felt pinched when wearing jeans even though they were a loose style
- Left leg – a shocking sensation was felt once while brushing my teeth. With the back and forth motion of my left hand, a rhythmic shock was felt in my left leg near the knee. When I stopped moving my hand, the shock stopped as well.
- Groin – pressure to the right side with each step upon the right foot (the day after mounting and riding horse for a brief time)
- Groin - Right side groin pain when using my foot to scoot a box of Christmas decorations across the floor.
- Groin – When rising from bed, there was a “stuck” feeling in the right groin area. I used my arm to position the leg instead of straining it into place.
- Right leg – occasional muscle pull / spasm from inside thigh to above the knee
- Right leg – was not functioning as the left; felt like it was disassociating itself and not doing what it should while walking
- Right hip – front – spasm in the area where the leg connects to front hip.
- Right hip – back – spasm just under the buttock area; where the leg connects to the hip
- Left arm – after Christmas shopping, a sudden pain with weakness in the shoulder and upper arm area. Changing position was painful, but relieved the pain when the right position was found.
- Entering and exiting a vehicle
- Driving (applying the breaks)
- Raising or stretching my right arm to reach or lift things
- Cutting up a hen when preparing a meal, I noticed that using force while cutting foods with a knife caused a return of the side pains.
- Mixing thick batter with a spoon
- Lifting big pots from the oven
- Sitting on plush, soft furniture
- Climbing steps or into a pick up truck
- Maneuvering my office chair around my computer area
- Sitting at the computer for extended periods of time
- Squatting
- Bending at the waist to reach lower than my knees
- Reclined positions
- Using a hoe
- Using a shovel
- Operating the garden tiller
